Choosing Kind... with a Buddy Bench!

As a culminating activity to our "Choose Kind" PBL, we are building a Buddy Bench for our playground! A Buddy Bench is a place students can go when they feel lonely or have no one to play with. Then, other students will see them at the Buddy Bench, invite them to play, and befriend the student! This week we have been reading informational articles to learn more about the buddy bench. We have been using context clues and inferring skills while reading these articles. To learn more about the Buddy Bench, visit this site: http://buddybench.org/

For the past 2 weeks after school, one student from each 4th grade classroom has stayed after school with Mr. Carroll to build our very own Buddy Bench for Oakland!!

Next week we will be writing letters to the editor to our newspaper to share our views on bullying and why we created the buddy bench. Then, we will have a Buddy Bench Dedication Ceremony to explain to the entire school how to use the Buddy Bench! We will also be celebrating August Pullman's birthday on this day! He is the main character of the book Wonder that we have been reading, and we have learned so much about bullying and good character from August! We are excited to reveal our Buddy Bench Friday at 8:30!!
