Junk Matters!

Yesterday a very special guest speaker came to speak to the 4th graders at Oakland Elementary School. Mr. Joseph McMillan is the owner of the company Junk Matters, a local single streaming recycling company. He spoke to our students about how he got the idea for his company, what Junk Matters does, and the importance of saving the world! What a great way to show students that what we are learning in our "Tread Lightly" PBL unit could lead to a future career! Thank you, Mr. McMillan!!

From the kids:
I learned that Junk Matters does single streaming recycling. This is when recycled things are placed in the same bin. I learned that Junk Matters has been in business for two years. I also learned that they have to work 10-12 hour days. Their name came from Mr. McMillan and his father brainstorming names. Junk Matters is helping to save the world by recycling a wider variety of objects.

Career Day

On October 31st we had Career Day. We learned about four distinct careers. We saw an attorney and he told us how he helps people if they are being treated unfairly. Next, we saw a Navy SEAL, they do things in the Military such as jump out of airplanes and handle explosives. Third, we went to Tabby Cakes and made a cupcake and ate it. We also learned how to make a cake. Finally, we went to see a doctor that works at Mary Black Hospital. The doctor told us what he does at the hospital and gave us all spongey hearts. While Career Day was very fun and informative I am still keeping my options open for what I want to be when I grow up.

At career day I learned a navy seal has to jump out of planes with dogs. I also learned that sometimes the dogs are attached to the jumpers. The dogs have the ability to deploy their own parachute. Then I learned they have to dive. Sometimes they dive without gear. They can dive up to 2 miles.

I learned a lot in every class, but I learned that there is a bunch of different things in a hospital. You can even be a carpenter at a hospital. You could also spend the night there. Or you could sleep there too. That is what I learned.

At career day I learned that a lawyer has to defend. The lawyer defends a person that is being sued for something bad. A lawyer has to read and learn a lot to be in law school for 4 years or more. Lawyers make a lot of money and get a lot of telephone calls. Lawyers are defending in court many times. They are trying to convince the judge to think that the person did not do it.

My favorite thing about career day was listening to the Navy Seal.  I learned that you never need to be afraid to jump out of an airplane or a helicopter.  I also learned that people usually have to be hooked to the dog if one is with them on their jump.  When the dogs jump out of the airplane, they have to wear an air mask.  When you are a Navy Seal, you must have a good scholarship.

This year for Career Day, we had four presenters.  We had a Doctor, Lawyer, Baker, and Army.  We learned that all careers require hard work, education, and getting a college degree is important.  I like the Army career.  I liked when the Army man asked some of us to stand up and then he started yelling at the ones he picked to stand up.  When he did that he said, “He’s putting us under pressure.”  He said that we would have to be able to swim if we wanted to be Seal.  He also said that we needed to know hard math.  Finally, he said that he would have to read a lot of books, “Enough to fill up 13 cabinets.”

Upstate Watershed Visit

Last week, the Upstate Watershed came to visit us and help teach us about distinct environments and the animals that live in them! We had so much fun and learned so much! This was a perfect introduction to what we will be talking about in science and in our PBL soon! Below is what we learned and some pictures!

I learned that a Leopard Gecko holds water in its tail. And I learned that a dung beetle tools up poop in balls. And also flies lay worms in Caribou.
-Devin

I learned that nose bat flies go in a nose of a moose. Also a beetle that lives in Africa and eats it. Also I learned that snakes have scales to be moist.
-Edward

I learned that all animals need natural resources. I there runs out of it they have to move or find other food. They can't survive without it.
-Trenton

I lean red that trees don't grow in tundra because the roots are ice. I also learned that the desert doesn't get much rain. One other thing I learned is cactus and camel store water.
-Mason

I learned that a bullfrog can flatten itself to scare enemies. I also learned there are 2 types of deserts. Finally I learned salamanders store water in their tail.
-Lucas

I learned that there are 2 types of forests. There is a plain forest that is in our backyard. There is a tropical forest like at a tropical place.
-Graham

I learned that distinct means different. I learned that some animals can't survive in different habitats. I learned adaptations help animals survive.
-Ben

I learned in the grasslands in Africa there is a beetle called a dung beetle. It cleans up manure. If they did not have the dung beetle it would be stinky.
-Bodey

The most important thing I learned is about how animals survive in the wild. It is pretty amazing.
-Matthew

The most important thing I learned was every animal has an environment and we shouldn't mess with their environment. And don't destroy their home unless you want them to destroy your home!
-Kyle

I found out that we have to take care of our Earth. And how animals blend in with their environment. And learning about how animals hunt their food.
-Joe

I learned that every animal lives in the habitat that it needs to survive. Like lions can only live in the grasslands only. That is what I learned.
-Ethan

I learned that not all animals can live in the same climate. Animals have different needs to survive.
-Jaxson

I learned that distinct environments are environments that are different for each animal. For example, a jellyfish lives in whiter when a mole lives in dirt.
-Hayden

The deer population was big. Groups of animals start out as one animal then it gets where it is a daily, then a community, and finally a really big group.
-Hunter

I learned that their are 6 habitats. I learned that animals that live in the rainforest are only bright colors.
-Nate

I learned that animals live in habitats like scorpions live in the desert. And sharks live in the ocean.
-Dmitriy

I learned that there are 2 different forests. I also learned that annuals always depend on their resources. The last thing I learned was that tundra animals change color.
-Brandon

I learned that nose bot flies go up animals nose and lay their eggs. I learned that an ostrich egg is as big as a football. I learned that the bullfrog likes to eat meat.

Dr. Patterson's Visit

Yesterday Dr. Patterson came to read to us  yesterday! He read us a book called Exclamation Mark by Amy Krouse Rosenthal about a misplaced exclamation mark learning that being different can be very exciting! This went along great with our "Choose Kind" PBL. We loved this story and Dr. Patterson coming to visit!!

Career Day at OES

During career day my class had an author come visit us. Honestly I have always wanted to be an author so this was very exciting for me. We learned that authors have to rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. This specific author took 2 and a-half years to write a book called Sal and Amanda. She got the idea of having salamanders for main characters because the South Carolina state amphibian is the salamander.

My favorite part of Career Day was when the BSIS guidance counselor talked to us. She talked to us about how we can do anything we set our mind to. Then we did a really fun activity where you and a partner got skittles from a bag and the different colors meant different things. For example, a red skittle might represent what you love about your family. How many different skittles you had determined how many things you had to say about the topic.

We also got to hear from a local bakery. They even let us decorate our own cupcakes!

Last, we heard from high school seniors. They were in student council and/or on sports teams. They talked to us about their goals for life and encouraged us to work hard in school.
