Trading Explorer Cards

We made explorer baseball cards in social studies, where students had to sketch our famous explorers and write their "stats." Then, students got to trade cards with each other! Here is the trading in action and some examples of our sketches:

Explorer Memoirs

To integrate our Explorers unit in social studies and our most recent writing unit on Memoirs, today in class students wrote memoirs for our explorers. But there was a catch... the memoirs could only be SIX words!! Here is what the students came up with:

"Discovered land, met Indians, made connections" by Hayden & Graham (Christopher Columbus)
"Born in Italy, sailed to America" by Bodey & Kyle (Christopher Columbus)
"Explored Hudson River, Hudson Bay, Dutch" by Nathan & Dmitriy (Henry Hudson)
"Eric the Red, son Lief Erikkson" by Mason & Devin (Eric the Red/Lief Eriksson)
"Discovered the strait, valley, river, bay" by Brandon & Matthew (Henry Hudson)
"Robert LaSalle sailed the Mississippi River" by Ben & Joe (Robert LaSalle)
"Claimed New York and also Canada" by Colby & Jaxson (Henry Hudson)
"Henry River, Hudson Bay, 13 Colonies" by Ethan & Trenton (Henry Hudson)
"An Indian attack killed Ferdinand Magellan" by Lucas & Nate (Ferdinand Magellan)
"Christopher Columbus went to the Bahamas" by Hunter & Edward (Christopher Columbus)

Where is John?

Just a cute little video for you... :)

The students loved this song! Each verse featured a different explorer. Students voted that this was their best performed verse that they wanted to feature on our blog!!
Also, last week Lauren won a show and tell pass and she brought her pet rabbit, JoJo, to share! We all got to hold JoJo and we even talked about what classification of animal JoJo is! How cute!

Christopher Columbus Play

1,2,3,action! This play is about Christopher Columbus. How he sailed the ocean blue in 1492.Columbus went to the King of Portugal and asked for the King to pay and supply the journey .The King turned Christopher down .Then, Christopher went to the King and Queen of Spain told them his idea and they accepted his journey .Christopher went to make a plan. I think in a play you need to have a clear voice. The  part in this play where you need the expression on your face is when you say ‘You won’t be disappointed!’ That needs a look on your face and a smile like you’re   leaving. That’s the expression you need during that time. Its important to be very fluent. My Group used a lot of fluency. The best step I thought was very well played  by kevin’s Group was when we had  seating arrangements around the classroom. That helped a lot throughout the play.

*This file was too large, so I had to break the play up into shorter clips. -Miss Glay
