Now that's good character!

This week in reading we have been working on character traits and finding evidence from the text to support the character traits. Each group was given a different character from Wonder with character traits. Their job was to find evidence from the text to support these traits. Here is what the students came up with:

Reading:  
We will continue with our novel study on the book Wonder. We will also be reading nonfiction articles about Buddy Benches, discussing text features, and building our own buddy benches for the playground!
 
Writing/Language:  
We will continue our unit on types of letters by discussing the parts of a friendly letter. We will be writing advice letters to younger grades helping them with their bullying questions! We will also begin looking at letters to the editor.
 
Math:
We will continue to practice our basic multiplication facts and be discussing strategies to subtract large numbers. Students will be required to study multiplication flash cards for ten minutes a night until they master their facts. Please initial their studying log nightly. 
 
Science/Social Studies:
In science we’ll continue our animal unit w/ classification & animal senses.
In social studies we will continue in our explorer unit by discussing the Columbian Exchange.

Animal Classification

Today, students used the iPad app called "Pic Collage" to show what they know about animal classification! They were each given a type of vertebrate- reptiles, birds, fish, mammals, or amphibians- to make a Pic Collage on to share with the class. Here are some pictures of the students working and their final products!

Choose Kind

Today students used a website called Blendspace to learn more about bullying. Students watched a series of videos- the song "Mean" by Taylor Swift, an interview with Patricia Palacco about her book Bully, a clip from the news about a group of boys banding together to stop bullying, and another video clip about random acts of kindness. As students were watching the videos, they answered comprehension questions about what they were learning. What's great about Blendspace is that students can work at their own pace! Arrrrr! Dress Like a Pirate Day!

Today was Dress Like a Pirate Day at school! Thanks to those who participated!!


We even got to see a fun pirate-themed play about conserving energy!! This will go along great with our next environment PBL "Tread Lightly"!




Explorer Memoirs

To integrate our Explorers unit in social studies and our most recent writing unit on Memoirs, today in class students wrote memoirs for our explorers. But there was a catch... the memoirs could only be SIX words!! Here is what the students came up with:

Off to the Magical Forest!

We had so much fun at the Magic Wood Forest Fair and we learned so much about landfills, recycling, how lumber is made into paper, and more!
