Week of September 15

Here's what to expect this week: Reading:   We will continue with our novel study on the book Wonder. We will also be with making inferences, citing evidence, and working on comprehension with informational articles about random acts of kindness and books such as The Recess Queen.

Writing/Language:   We will begin our unit on types of letters by discussing the parts of a friendly letter. We will also be writing a letter to someone to show our appreciation to them, which goes along with our PBL topic this week of random acts of kindness!

Math: We will continue to practice our basic multiplication facts and be discussing strategies to compare and add large numbers. Students will be required to study multiplication flash cards for ten minutes a night until they master their facts. Please initial their studying log nightly.

Science/Social Studies: In science we will review safety precautions and the scientific method for our test (Thursday), while beginning animal classification. In SS we will continue in our explorers unit with the discoveries of the Spanish, English, and Portuguese.     Upcoming Assessments: We will have a science test Thursday on safety precautions and the steps to a scientific investigation. We will also have a reading test Thursday on our Wonder vocab & character traits 100 BC Goals: Good- 55 steps Better- 100 steps Captain of the Week:            Our Captain of the Week is Devin Roe!! Devin is such a hard-worker and regularly displays the character traits of: kindness, cooperation, respect, responsibility, and problem-solving. Great job, Devin! 3..2..1.. BLAST OFF!

First we asked question about which rocket will travel the farthest. Next we research online facts about rockets. I learned some rockets use liquid fuels and some use solid fuels. Next I got all of the materials and steps. Then we started to build our rocket. After we build our rocket we went out side to launch them. Then we launched  our rockets. Matthew won ,his went 75 feet and every body was screaming. Then we came after Matthew and Lucas. Mine and Bodey went  46 feet. Then we came in.

Native American Homes

Last week we built Native American homes to help us learn more about the different regions of Native Americans. Here are some pictures and what some students had to say about building the homes:

Eastern Woodlands-Longhouse

Plains- Teepee and Earthlodge

We are the plain people  and we built tepees and earth loge. And we built a tepee made out  of couth sticks sand clay . The first thing we did was we put the clay down  on the paper and put the sticks on the paper so it will and hold it up. And we put clay around the tepee so it will keep the sticks from falling down. Then we panted the tepee so it will look like it has fur on it.

Then we did the Earth Loge and it took a long time so then we started off with the fence it took along time to  build the fence a bunch of sticks so then we put tape on fence to hold it up. Then we some plates  to make a dome shape .And then we had to put clay down so it will stick down to the plates  then we put some sand on it because it had sand on it.

Great Basin- Hogan

My group  Built the Hogan.  from the great basin . We used  a little bit of bark. The straw for the chimney and clay. We used it for fire, spares ,and smoke, 2 little ponds, blood  (from the bear that they hunted),2 bushes. We used tooth picks. the  men with the guns. We used sand and we covered it with play dough. We built spares and berries.

Week of September 8th

Here's what's ahead for us this week:

Reading:   We will continue with our novel study on the book Wonder along with reading and analyzing a book and song (poem) called Don’t Laugh at Me! We will be making inferences about the texts and talk about word choice and tone.

Writing/Language:   We finish drafting our memoirs this week. We will then discuss the difference between revising and editing so we can do this to our own memoirs. We will also be looking at how authors use dialogue in their own writing so we can use it in our memoirs!

Math: We will continue to practice our basic multiplication facts and be discussing how to round numbers. Students will be required to study multiplication flash cards for ten minutes a night until they master their facts. Please initial their studying log nightly.

Science/Social Studies: In science we will continue with safety precautions and the scientific method. We will use these skills when building and launching our own rockets this week! In social studies we will test Native Americans Tuesday, then begin our explorers unit.     Upcoming Assessments: We will have a unit test in social studies on Native Americans on Tuesday! STUDY hard on Monday night! We are Gentlemen!

Every morning we have a morning meeting. Our "Captain of the Week" gets to lead the morning meetings and lead the class in our classroom pledge. The boys made up this pledge at the beginning of the year. They thought of character traits that they wanted to strive to be every day. This was the beginning of our morning meeting this morning:

Week of September 2nd

Here's what to look forward to this week:

Reading:  

We will continue with our novel study on the book Wonder! We will be discussing possible meanings of precepts from the book such as “Your deeds are your monuments.” We will also be studying some important vocabulary.

Writing/Language:  

We begin drafting our memoirs this week. We will also be looking at how authors use transitional words and figurative language in their own writing so we can use it in our memoirs!

Math: 

We will continue to practice our basic multiplication facts and our study of place value/forms of numbers. 

Students will be required to study multiplication flash cards for ten minutes a night until they master their facts. Please initial their studying log nightly.  

Science/Social Studies: 

In science we review and test the process skills. We will then be discussing safety precautions scientists use, along with the scientific method.

In social studies we will be studying primary sources on Native Americans and build Native American homes!!
