Star Lab: Astronomy is Awesome!

I learned that the stars can form different shapes. In the Earth, we are the white clouds of the Milky Way! That was awesome!! That was a thrilling time for me and Miss Glay's  4th Grade Class!!!

Have you ever herd of  Ryans  belt and no not that belt  I mean the one in astronomy  trust me it is way cooler than some belt owned by Ryan  that was my favorite part about star lab other than being with miss Glay.

At the star lab I came in and I was amazed.  First, when we went into the planetarium, we were told an Indian story of how they thought the moon and night came.  Then, the lights went out and we learned about the phases of the moon. Lastly, we were talking about the milky way and Pluto.

We the People of Miss Glay's class have memorized the Preamble! And we know just how important those first three words are, so we even made a music video about them! Enjoy!

Electromagnets... How do they work?

In the Wonder Room last week, we created an electromagnet. Ours worked, but it was very weak. Here's a video showing a stronger electromagnet. It also reminds you of the three ways to make an electromagnet stronger.

Help! I need to memorize the Preamble!

Maybe this School House Rock video will help you!

Keep practicing... you don't want to end up like this:

Congrats to Brayson, Alyssa, Sarah, and Izabella who have already memorized and recited it! Who will be ready when we return to school?!

Snow Day Fun

I personally do not enjoy the snow, but I know a certain little Basset Hound who loves it! Here's a little glimpse into our snow day fun:

I hope everyone is enjoying the snow as much as Toby!!!

It looks like the kids are having a lot of fun in the snow, too!

OES at Wofford

This Thursday, the OES choir sang the National Anthem at the Wofford basketball game and the PE Club performed during the half time show. As always, Mrs. McCraw and Mrs. Cabe put on a wonderful show!! Between the singing, juggling, jump roping, and pogo sticks, one thing is for sure- we have some GREAT performers in fourth grade!!

I wonder... What is magnetism?

Magnetism

Today we went to the Wonder Room and did 5 stations about magnets. Our 1st station was about attracting and repelling 2 magnets to each other. One side there was a North Pole and the other side of the magnet was the South Pole.

Our 2nd station was about what materials are attracted and some that don’t attract are ruler, wood, and plastic. Some materials that are attracted are: scissors, nails, and binder clip.

Our 3rd station was how many paperclips you can fit on a magnet. Boyce and Cameron got 65 paperclips on the magnet. This worked because the paperclips were metal.

Our 4th station was how strong is the magnets if you put a paper between them. When we put the magnets to our shirt it stuck together.

Our 5th station was shavings to a stick that had iron on the bottom of the stick. It worked because the iron is magnetic and it attracted to iron shavings.

Our 6th station was to make an electromagnet. It worked because we made coils around a nail to make it a magnet. We know it worked because we could feel a tiny pull from the paperclip.

Science Fair Fun!

My Science Project Win

I won First place in the Science fair. What I did was got 6 all of the same plants (African Violets). Then we put different liquids in each plant. Here are what we put in them Coke, Milk, Orange Juice, Water, Sugar water, salt water. My hypothesis was that orange juice was going to do the best.  My wonderful mom and I watched most of them grow but 2 die for several weeks. Then we had the results milk and salt water did the worst and died. Then orange juice and coke did okay. The sugar water and water did the best!!!!So next time you go to water your plants try water or sugar water.

The Articles of Confederation... Well, they tried!

We all had fun doing a game with money it had something to do with Articles of confederation. We had five different types of money. Everybody got a different amount. We picked five items we wanted to buy. The Items I got were a phone, dog, football, laptop, IPad.  The items were on different color paper and cost different amount of money. If you had 150 in green money and 50 in yellow and a bike in yellow cost 200, you just need the 150 and the 50 but you can’t put them two together. You can’t put the money together because they are different types of money. This connects to the Articles of Confederation because each state had their different types of money and you couldn’t buy something in South Carolina with Rhode Island money.

I wonder... What are insulators and conductors?

On Friday we went to the wonder room to build circuits. We tested different materials to see if they work. Some Martials we used are a fuzzy thing, a nail, and pencil with lots more. First my group and I used a pencil it is a conducer and an insulator the wood is an insulator and the Led is a Conductor. So we tried to do the led but we found out that the battery was not working. So Ms. Glay gave us a new battery and it worked. And the fuzzy strip was Insulator and a nail was a Conductor.
