Promote a Pet

As part of our current PBL, Walk on the Wildside, students are marketing a dog that is up for adoption at the Spartanburg Humane Society. One way we are promoting our pet, Diamond, is by making flyers. Below are the flyers students made to advertise Diamond in hopes of finding her forever home. Students used the Pic Collage app on the iPads to create these flyers. We talked about using adjectives to appeal to the emotions and to point out Diamond's great qualities in order to persuade others to adopt this wonderful dog! These flyers will be put up in our school and community. Please spread the word and help Diamond find a loving home!

I wonder... what is refraction?

As an introduction to our light unit, the students went to Oakland's Wonder Room! They completed some investigations where they got to experiment with refraction and reflection! Here are Alyssa's thoughts:

In the first station we learned about how light uses water to play tricks on our eyes. You put a penny in water. The light reflected off the penny and made it look like there was another penny on the top of the water. It used refraction with light.

In the second station there was a puzzle piece and you put it behind a full cup of water. The puzzle piece looked bigger. The water was like magnifying glass. I think the light refracted off of the cup.

In the third station you could put a pencil in the water and it looked like it was split in half. The reason the pencil did that was because the light hit the water and traveled a bit slower than in air which made the pencil look different. It was all because the light was bending different ways in the water.

In the forth station you can observe a newspaper. First you put drops of water on the newspaper and it would look bigger. Second you put magnifying glass. Finally you put a clear marble and the words on the newspaper looked bigger. Our teacher said it was all about light refracting.

Oh Deer!

Last week in science we played two games. The first, "Oh Deer," demonstrated how organisms depend on their environment for survival. The second, "Hop Scotch Migration," showed how organisms can negatively affect their environment, and therefore, other organisms. Here's what the kids had to say about these games:

Oh Deer:
I learned that everything depends on each other. How you play is the deer are on one line and the resources are on the other. The deer and the resources pick  a resource. They have choices between watter, food, and shelter. The deer would get the resource  that they pict  and took it to there side and the people that didn’t get a resource turned in to a resource. And when the deer population got smaller because there weren’t enough resources. When there were enough resources the deer population grew.

Cat Condos- Our Finished Products!

After many weeks of designing, measuring, problem solving, re-designing, constructing, and decorating, we are finally finished with our cat condos and are ready to donate them to the Spartanburg Humane Society. We hope some sweet cats are able to enjoy them until they get adopted!
